YouTube comprando TwitchTV?

According to "sources familiar with the pact", Variety is reporting that Google (specifically, YouTube) has already reached a deal to buy game streaming service Twitch. For, oh, $1 billion.P

UPDATE: The Wall Street Journal disputes this, and claims that while a deal is indeed being worked on, "The talks are at an early stage, and a deal isn't imminent".P

That's an insane amount of money, but then, thanks to the growing popularity of streaming - not to mention the fact Twitch has become a key player in the next-gen console marketplace - it might, in the long-run, turn out to be a savvy investment.P

Variety reports, however, that it's not quite a done deal; seems Google's lawyers are ready for a challenge from the Justice Department on the grounds of competition issues, given the fact that both services are already #1 in their respective fields.P

A recent report from networking company Sandvine says that Twitch has now broken into the top 15 users of bandwidth during peak hours in North America, growing from 0.46% of all "downstream bandwidth" in Fall 2013 to 1.35% by March this year.P

It doesn't take long to envisage the potential pluses in such a deal. Twitch could definitely benefit from YouTube's tech and reliability. Then again, we have enough trouble with copyright claims on YouTube as it is. Bringing Twitch into that fold could be a nightmare-in-waiting...P

We've contacted Twitch for comment, and will update if we hear back.

No se, en si estaria bueno que Google tuviera el poder de Twitch, pero especificamente YouTube, con la cagada que hicieron con G+ todo integrado y los comentarios toqueteados en todos los videos y demas, no me convence.

lo que si estaria de menos es el tema del contenido con copyright, que en twitch hay rienda suelta.. la gente mientras streamea pasa musica y no pasa nada...

aunque en realidad.. en algun momento iba a llegar la cana, por medio de yt o por otro lado.. asi que es lo mismo...

En el stream de dota 2 de GD Studio pasan abiertamente jugando con emulador de Nintendo 64 y ahora el Dolphin jaja, pero un flaco del stream parece que hablo con alguien y son puros rumores, pero seria una cagada mas que nada por el tema del copyright, osea si mejoran el tema de servidores o lo que sea, para que sea mas facil ver algo en source, sin tener una mega conexion, estaría bueno, yo cuando stremean matches de Dota2 en Dialymotion lo veo en 1080p sin problemas, en twitch es imposible.

A mi me pasa que cuando Dailymotion anda bien Twitch anda para el o*to y vice.
Ojalá no se pongan rompehuevos con el tema del copyright en Twitch.

No sé cómo manejaría Google el copyright en Twitch si se llegara a concretar el negocio. Por el gameplay no debería haber problemas; la emulación creo que en teoría es legal si tenés el juego original; la música sería lo que causaría complicaciones (aunque hay mucho contenido que se puede usar gratis mencionado al autor).

En YT hay varios problemas con la forma en que controlan el copyright. Uno de ellos es que hay herramientas que identifican el contenido y lo flagean automáticamente; se han dado casos en los que han flageado reviews de un juego por usar parte del trailer, cosa que no tiene mucho sentido. El otro es que no hay presunción de inocencia; establecido el reclamo, la persona que subió el video tiene que disputarlo y probar que cae dentro de fair use para poder seguir ganando dinero por los ads.

o mas alla de eso.. a mi youtube me bloqueo videos donde streameaba el fifa por ejemplo, xq mientras estas en el menu, pasa musica, que no es contenido exclusivo del juego ponele.. tonces me salto con la plancha en el pecho diciendo que infringiendo el copyright de tal artista

y ta.. hay varios juegos que pasan musica que no es contenido exclusivo, nfs, gta, etc

La cagada es que en algunos casos (como FIFA supongo) se puede solucionar el problema silenciando la música y dejando sólo los efectos de sonido/voces, pero hay juegos donde la música forma parte importante de la experiencia (como las radios en GTA).

La gente que pasa lo que tiene en el reproductor ya es un tema aparte; la industria de la música es muy intransigente. Por ahí podrían encontrar contenido que use una licencia estilo Creative Commons.

Son solo rumores.
En el caso que se lleve a cabo no se si va a ser perjudicial o beneficioso para mi team que actualmente tiene contrato con Twitch, si llegan a cancelar el contrato nos cagan una gran parte de los ingresos.
Aunque seguramente siga todo igual con la misma gente.

La idea de que no se pueda subir más contenido estilo GamePlays y monetizarlo vino directamente de Youtube y NO de los publishers.

Es más, si subís un video haciendo un cover, Youtube mismo te flagea y te pregunta si es un cover, y si ponés que sí y estás monetizando el video, la mitad va para vos, y la mitad para el sello o el artísta del cual hiciste el cover.

Lo que le interesa a Youtube ahora es la audiencia generada en el e-sport, ve que ahí hay guita, mucha guita, y quiere meter la cuchara.

Lo peor de todo eso va a ser si se les ocurre incorporar Google+, que es un asco.

Yo tengo 50/10 y puedo ver en Source, al menos la mayoria de los que veo. Lo que no puedo es ver dos al mismo tiempo en Source, pero eso varia en cada streamer. Alguno te meten 1080p 60fps 3500 bitrate, otro te meten 720p 30 fps 2000 bitrate, es bastante diferente...

No recuerdo como era el nombre del anterior que era re popular, creo que tenia algo de 3D en el nombre...

Lo de G+ no creo que lo pongan, con la experiencia de YouTube les alcanzó y les sobró. Quizas, como una opcion, como ya tienen algunas paginas de registro por Facebook. Pero obligatorio no lo creo.

We respect the rights of copyright owners, and are voluntarily undertaking this effort to help protect both our broadcasters and copyright owners.

What Is Audio Recognition?

We’ve partnered with Audible Magic, which works closely with the recorded music industry, to scan past and future VODs for music owned or controlled by clients of Audible Magic. This includes in-game and ambient music. When music in the Audible Magic database is detected (“Flagged Content”), the affected portion of the VOD will be muted and volume controls for that VOD will be turned off. Additionally, past broadcasts and highlights with Flagged Content are exportable but will remain muted.

The Audible Magic technology will scan for third-party music in 30 minute blocks -- if Audible Magic does not detect its clients’ music, that portion of the VOD will not be muted. If third party audio is detected anywhere in the 30-minute scanned block, the entire 30 minutes will be muted.

How It Works: Scanning VODs Only

Audio Recognition will only be run against audio in VODs. We are not scanning live broadcasts and there is no automated takedown of live content.

Flagged Content will display an on-screen notification informing viewers that content owned or controlled by a third-party has been identified. The progress bar will also be red for the duration of the muted section.


Please note that Audio Recognition is not guaranteed to be 100% accurate. It may return false positives or miss content from copyright owners who do not work with Audible Magic. If you wish to include music in your VODs, please remember that you are responsible for clearing all such rights (this includes ambient music that may be playing in the background while you are broadcasting). If you would like to include free-to-use music in your VODs, there are a variety of resources available to you, including:

The response to the proposed changes hasn't been entirely positive, but Shear insisted in the AMA that they're both necessary and, in the long run, good for the community. "We did need to change things," he said. "This is laying groundwork for some work in the future you guys are REALLY going to like. We've been intending to do this for some time, but it took us a while to identify and select a content identification partner and get the system up and reliable."

He also stated very bluntly that Twitch won't mute live video streams, even if it could. "We have absolutely no intention of running any audio recognition against live video, period," he wrote. "We really don't want to do it on live, and I don't see any reason why we ever would."
